Interview With Kyle Bazinet (AKA "Baz")

Meet current Stage Manager and Monitor Engineer for the In Dreams - Roy Orbison 2018 North America Tour, Kyle Bazinet. Aka “Baz”. Baz shares with the SoundTools team about his experience in the industry and his love for SoundTools products, his two favorites being the Mic Switcher and XLR Sniffer/Sender.

What are some of the tours you've worked on in the past? Which were your favorites and why?

I’ve been blessed to work on a lot of tours for many different audio companies and bands. I would have to say one of my favorite tours I have been a part of is Warped Tour. Each day brought new challenges and a sense of brotherhood with my fellow coworkers. A few of my other favorites that have made me grow as a professional audio tech and engineer is Godsmack, Mayhem Festival, Uproar Festival, Ballyhoo!, Flobots, and Steve Miller.

What have been some of your favorite one offs?

Coachella, Newport Beach Jazz Festival, Red Rocks, South by Southwest, Aspen Winter X Games, Daytona 500 pre race show, and the 311 Cruise.

What got you started in the industry?

A Front of House Audio Engineer at Ozzfest 2003 noticed my friend and I. He invited us into FOH and I was truly blown away by the console. After I watched him work on the mix during the whole set I saw how fun, challenging and technical a career in live sound could be. And the rest is history...

What SoundTools products do you use?

I use two of the SoundTools products at almost every gig I am on. The famous Sniffer and Sender XLR tester is a tool that every tech and Audio Engineer should have. The 3 in 1 Mic Switcher should always be your backup for any gig when vocals are key. It has saved my butt a few times- when your RF microphone starts to go out, you can switch right over. I use my mic switcher channel A on my main RF microphone all the time. Channel B is my RF back up, making channel C a wired sm58. With this set up I am ready for anything to happen. Thanks to SoundTools, my gigs are easier and less stressful. I cannot wait to see what other products they come out with in the future.

Any Advice for other SoundHumans out there?

A few minutes of your time can change a person’s life. Be nice the next time you are working a gig, that little kid or stagehand might be your next boss or Dave Rat. We all can’t know everything. Just remember to ask questions and watch the masters at work. I want to thank my RAT Sound Family and everyone who has supported me and inspired me throughout my career.
